Music Box Theatre, Chicago
This project involved a re-design of a store front space that fronted a 1920’s movie theatre. In doing so it became a second theatre space to the original. The “atmospheric” design concept of the original theatre was chosen for the new space, therefore coordinating. Here I created two trompe l’oeil windows that flank each sidewall of the movie screen on a background of faux fresco, the proscenium arch itself is decorated with pilasters made from salvaged plasterwork of the demolished Granada Theatre, repaired and then polychromed. The remaining wall spaces were given a faux stone block design and faux marble columns. An interesting aspect to this project was to create exaggerated contrast of the paint colors so that they would show correctly in a low light setting”.
